Happy Friday friends! I am SO excited to share this gorgeous, romantic DC War Memorial Engagement Session in Washington, DC with you today! If you’re new around here, welcome! I’ve been photographing weddings here in Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia for seven years and consider it an absolute honor anytime a couple makes time for their engagement photos. Colleen and Justin were troopers when it came to navigating the weather (more on that in the next paragraph!) Growing up near DC, you’d think I would have explored the region a million times over, but it’s really thanks to my sweet couples and photography that I’ve become so familiar with the area. I LOVE this monument in particular because it’s one of the few that has ZERO construction anywhere. We love a blank, beautiful, white canvas for romantic, clean photos. While we are patiently waiting for The Lincoln Memorial construction to finish (who knows when), this is a great alternative!
The Hidden Gem of DC Monuments
Back to Colleen and Justin… This sweet couple booked me for their epic wedding next year and quickly reached out about an engagement session. It’s always a treat to meet my couples so soon after chatting and going over timeline ideas. The day came for their session; I checked the weather and noticed we might be “dodging” a few showers. I chatted with Colleen about it, and we both felt good about moving forward after looking at the timing. Little did I know how everything would work perfectly for their photos and outfits…
I parked my car (always an adventure in DC) and started my walk over to the monument (which turned into a full-on run) as the rain and wind began. Thank goodness Colleen and Justin had arrived underneath the monument for some amount of shelter. Great timing! Here I expected to arrive as a dry, professional-looking photographer. Needless to say, my first impression was probably pretty hilarious as I came up the stairs dripping wet, breathing heavily, and smiling at the fact that I decided against bringing an umbrella (NEVER AGAIN). Though the umbrella wouldn’t have helped much due to the wind, I will forever bring one if it even hints at drizzling. Lesson learned!
Despite my appearance and the pelts of rain, Colleen and Justin kindly waited a few moments as the rain slowed. Soon the area cleared out, and we were able to start. Here’s where things started to really look up. Because of the rain, the monument was covered in a thin bit of water. It made the marble even more stunning, and as the sun peeked through, it gave us the best glow. You know how special the sun looks after it rains? That is exactly what happened during that 45 minutes. It was romantic and magical. Such a blessing!

Colleen and Justin, thank you for entrusting me with the honor of being your engagement and wedding photographer! Thank you for rolling with the punches and being so patient and understanding as your wet photographer tried new and fun creative poses with you. You both were a joy to photograph. I cannot wait for your wedding next year!
