How to Write Wedding Vows

Education + Planning

Have we completely lost the art of writing? I hope not! Even if you don’t feel as though you are an exponential writer, I want to encourage you today to be as intentional as possible with your wedding vows. Writing wedding vows is a deeply personal and meaningful task. Here are some steps and tips to guide you through the process:

1. Reflect on Your Relationship

  • Take time to reflect on your relationship. If you have kept a journal throughout your time or have photos from specific dates, look at those items to help you remember specific moments. Think about significant moments, challenges you’ve overcome together, and what makes your love unique.

2. Decide on the Tone

  • What tone and style do you both envision for your vows? They can be heartfelt and romantic, humorous and light-hearted, or a mix of both.

3. Gather Inspiration

  • Read examples of wedding vows to gather inspiration. You can find an example below (through instagram), in books, or from friends and family who have written their own vows.

4. Start Early

  • Begin writing your vows well in advance of your wedding day. This allows time for reflection, revisions, and practice.

5. Be Authentic

  • Write from the heart and be authentic. Your vows should reflect your true feelings and the unique bond you share. This is not a time to use AI! I know it can be tempting, but in a world of artificial, the authentic still shines brightest.

7. Keep It Concise

  • Aim for a length that feels comfortable and meaningful to you. Vows typically range from 1-3 minutes when spoken aloud, but you can take as long as you need. As a photographer, I’ll take all the time you give me to capture the moment. Don’t feel rushed! Vows are such a blessing for everyone witnessing your marriage.

8. Practice and Revise

  • Practice reading your vows aloud. This helps you gauge the flow and make adjustments for clarity and emotional impact.

9. Consider Writing Together

  • Some couples choose to write their vows separately, while others may write them together. Decide what feels right for you as a couple.

10. Prepare for the Moment

  • On your wedding day, take a deep breath, speak clearly, and savor the moment as you share your vows with your partner and loved ones.

Writing your own wedding vows is a special opportunity to express your love and commitment in your own words. Embrace the process and enjoy crafting vows that reflect the unique bond you share with your partner. These are the moments we remember for a lifetime!

Bonus tip: Keep a copy of your vows to look back on during your anniversary celebrations or whenever you need a reminder of the beautiful promises you made to each other.
