A Timeless Sunrise Engagement Session at the Jefferson Memorial & National Gallery of Art

There is something undeniably magical about Washington, D.C. before the city wakes. As the first light of the morning reflects across the marble monuments, the crowds disappear, leaving behind a quiet stillness that feels almost entirely your own. For couples dreaming of elegant, timeless engagement photos, sunrise is truly one of the most beautiful times to experience the city.

Jackie and Liam envisioned an engagement session that felt refined, romantic, and effortlessly classic. With two iconic Washington, D.C. locations as the backdrop, the Jefferson Memorial and the National Gallery of Art, we created a gallery that beautifully reflects both their relationship and the timeless architecture that makes our nation’s capital so unique.

Sunrise at the Jefferson Memorial

We began our morning at the Jefferson Memorial at sunrise. One of my favorite things about photographing here early in the day is the peaceful atmosphere. Without the usual crowds, we were able to embrace the quiet beauty of the monument while capturing both intimate portraits and sweeping architectural images.

Jackie’s flowing linen white dress paired beautifully with the warm marble columns, while Liam’s soft neutral suit complemented the understated elegance of the setting. Together, their wardrobe choices created a timeless look that felt perfectly at home among the memorial’s grand architecture.

As the sun slowly rose, soft light filled the colonnade, creating the dreamy, glowing atmosphere that makes sunrise sessions in Washington, D.C. so unforgettable.

An Editorial Second Look at the National Gallery of Art

After sunrise, Jackie changed into a stunning second outfit before meeting me at the National Gallery of Art.

This portion of the session offered an entirely different feel. The museum’s clean lines, sophisticated interiors, and classic architecture created an editorial backdrop that perfectly complemented their elevated attire.

The combination of two locations allowed us to create a gallery with incredible variety, from romantic outdoor portraits surrounded by iconic landmarks to elegant images that feel equally at home in the pages of a magazine.

Why I Love Sunrise Engagement Sessions in Washington, D.C.

If you’re considering engagement photos in Washington, D.C., I almost always recommend sunrise.

Not only is the light soft and flattering, but you’ll also experience many of the city’s most iconic locations without the large crowds that arrive later in the morning. This allows us to photograph naturally, move freely throughout each location, and create imagery that feels peaceful, intentional, and timeless.

Whether we’re exploring the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Gallery of Art, or another meaningful location, sunrise offers the perfect balance of beautiful light and a relaxed experience.

Planning Your Washington, D.C. Engagement Session

Choosing the right location, time of day, and wardrobe can make all the difference in creating timeless engagement photos. Here are a few of my favorite tips for planning a seamless experience in Washington, D.C.

Best Time of Day

If your schedule allows, I almost always recommend a sunrise session for Washington, D.C. engagement photos.

Not only is the morning light beautifully soft and flattering, but you’ll also enjoy many of the city’s most iconic landmarks before the crowds arrive. The quieter atmosphere allows us to move through each location with ease, creating images that feel peaceful, natural, and uninterrupted.

Choosing the Right Location

One of my favorite parts of the planning process is helping couples select locations that reflect both their personalities and the overall aesthetic they’re envisioning.

Some of my favorite Washington, D.C. engagement session locations include:

  • Jefferson Memorial for timeless marble architecture and sunrise light
  • Lincoln Memorial for iconic columns and sweeping monument views
  • National Gallery of Art for elegant, editorial-inspired portraits
  • Hillwood Estate Gardens for lush greenery and romantic walking paths
  • Georgetown for charming streets, historic architecture, and a European feel
  • The Tidal Basin for waterfront views and cherry blossoms in the spring

Many couples choose two nearby locations to create additional variety while maintaining a cohesive gallery.

What to Wear

Wardrobe plays a significant role in the overall feel of your engagement gallery.

I typically recommend:

  • Neutral or soft color palettes
  • Classic silhouettes that won’t feel dated over time
  • Coordinated outfits rather than perfectly matching
  • Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
  • One elevated outfit and one more relaxed look if you’re planning a second outfit change

For Jackie and Liam’s session, their wardrobe beautifully complemented each setting, from a timeless white dress and tailored neutral suit at sunrise to sophisticated attire inside the National Gallery of Art.

P.S. I have a full style guide I love sharing with every single couple when working with me!

Do You Need a Permit?

Some locations throughout Washington, D.C. require permits for professional photography, while others may have restrictions depending on the day, season, or group size.

As part of your experience, I’ll help guide you through any permit requirements and recommend locations that fit your vision while keeping the planning process as seamless as possible.

What to Expect During Your Session

One of the questions I hear most often is:

“We’re awkward in front of the camera. Will you tell us what to do?”

Absolutely.

My approach is a balance of gentle direction and genuine connection. I’ll guide you through natural movement and flattering poses while also creating space for candid moments to unfold. My goal is for your images to feel effortless, not overly posed, so you can focus on simply enjoying this season together.
